An internal link is simply a link from one page of your website to another page on your website.
Internal links are an excellent way for you to improve your overall link profile by using specific keyword phrases to link to other content on your website.
An example is this post. Now that this post has been created, any time I use the phrase ‘internal link’ or ‘internal links’ in another blog post I can link back to this post so people can learn what an internal link is.
Taken to another level, I can go back to all my previous blog posts and see if I have used either of these phrases. If so, I can add a link of that phrase to this post.
This ends up being a great benefit to the overall optimization of your website. Here’s why.
When you use a certain keyword or phrase to link to another page, either on your site or another one, Google looks at that keyword as the first indication of what a user should expect when clicking on that link.
If the linked phrase matches or supports the content found on the page you are linking to, again, whether it’s on your site or another one, that can help improve the optimization of the linking page as well as the linked-to page.
